Christmas in Rovaniemi: How to Plan a Calm, Magical Trip

By Toni & Jaana, your Arctic Rest hosts · 3 min read · Updated November 2026

Christmas in Lapland is a dream for many families, and it can absolutely live up to it. In our experience, the families who enjoy it most are not the ones who see everything, but the ones who leave space for snowball fights, cocoa and an early night.

Book the important things early

December is the busiest month of the year in Rovaniemi. Accommodation and popular experiences fill up well in advance, especially the days just before Christmas.

Decide which one or two experiences matter most to your family and reserve them first. Everything else can be spontaneous.

  • Reserve accommodation first.
  • Then book the experiences you would be sad to miss.
  • Leave at least one day completely open.

Visiting Santa Claus Village

Santa Claus Village sits on the Arctic Circle about 8 km from the city center. Allow a generous half-day, dress for standing outdoors and check the official website for Santa visits, photography and opening times.

Different activities in the area are run by different operators, so do not assume everything is included or open at the same hours. Staying nearby can make the busiest day a little calmer for small children.

Christmas Eve and holiday opening hours

In Finland, Christmas Eve is the main day of celebration, and many shops, restaurants and services have shortened hours or close between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. Check opening times for your dates and plan groceries in advance.

Having a kitchen of your own takes the pressure off: a simple festive dinner at home can become a family highlight in its own right.

Make peace with short days

Around the winter solstice there are only a few hours of usable light, often a soft blue twilight. Plan outdoor activities around the middle of the day and enjoy the cosy hours that follow.

Keep evenings warm and simple. Children who are well rested enjoy the next day far more than those who were out late chasing yet another activity.

Keep it calm, keep it magical

Build each day around one main event, a warm lunch and plenty of rest. Snow, sledding and a quiet walk under the Christmas lights cost nothing and are often what children remember most.
