Best Time to Visit Rovaniemi: A Season-by-Season Guide

By Toni & Jaana, your Arctic Rest hosts · 3 min read · Updated November 2026

“When should we go?” is the first question almost every guest asks us, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you want to remember. Rovaniemi changes completely through the year, from blue-hour snow days to nights when the sun barely sets. This is how we think about the seasons after many trips north.

The short answer

Come in December for Christmas atmosphere, in January to March for deep snow and longer winter activity days, from late August into early spring for a chance of northern lights, in September for autumn colours, and around midsummer for the midnight sun.

There is no wrong season, only different trips. The mistake we see most often is expecting every highlight in one week: a snowy aurora night and the midnight sun belong to opposite ends of the year.

  • Christmas magic: December.
  • Snow activities with more daylight: February to March.
  • Northern lights: roughly late August to early April, weather permitting.
  • Midnight sun: around June and early July.

December: Christmas, short days and the busiest weeks

December is when Rovaniemi feels most like a Christmas card, and also when it is busiest. Daylight is very short around the winter solstice, often a soft blue twilight rather than bright sunshine, which many visitors find beautiful once they plan for it.

Book accommodation and the experiences that matter most early, and leave unhurried time between outings. If Christmas is the whole point of the trip, our Christmas guide goes into more detail.

January to March: deep winter and brighter days

January and February are usually the coldest months, so clothing matters more than ever. In return, the snow is often at its best and the Christmas crowds have eased. By March, the days lengthen quickly and bright snowy afternoons make husky, reindeer and skiing days very pleasant.

Cold snaps can still change plans, so check FMI forecasts and warnings and keep a flexible day. Our packing guide covers how to dress for serious frost.

April and May: melting snow and quiet streets

Early April can still offer good snow and the last chances of aurora on darker nights. Later in spring, melting snow makes trails wet and some winter activities close for the season. It is a quieter, more practical time to visit if you are curious about the city itself rather than winter adventures.

Check which operators are still running on your dates before booking flights.

June and July: the midnight sun

Around midsummer the sun stays up through the night, and evenings by the river can feel endless. Santa Claus Village is open year-round, and hiking, paddling and long light evenings replace snow activities.

Bring an eye mask if you are sensitive to light, and insect repellent for forest walks. Our summer guide is full of ideas for these bright weeks.

August to October: ruska colours and the first auroras

As nights darken again from late August, the first northern lights of the season become possible, sometimes reflected in still lakes that have not yet frozen. In September, the forests and fells turn red and gold in the Finnish autumn colour season known as ruska.

Autumn is one of our favourite seasons for travellers who prefer hiking boots to snow suits. October can be grey and changeable before the snow arrives, so plan indoor alternatives.

Choosing your base by season

In winter, a warm home with space to dry clothing makes daily life easier; in summer, a central address puts the riverside and evening restaurants within an easy walk. Larger groups tend to value separate bedrooms and a kitchen in every season.
