Rovaniemi is a great base, but some of Lapland's most memorable winter scenery is a drive away. A day trip is the perfect way to see frozen waterfalls, silent forests and snow-laden fells, especially if you prefer to leave the driving and route planning to a guide.
Korouoma: frozen waterfalls
Korouoma canyon is known for its frozen waterfalls, which form impressive ice walls in winter. Arctic Native's Frozen in Time walk follows an approximately 5 km trail that can be challenging. It is not recommended for small children or guests with reduced mobility.
Riisitunturi National Park: a winter wonderland
Riisitunturi is famous for its trees heavily covered in snow and ice. Arctic Native's Into the White is a moderately demanding 5 km walk, suitable for families who are comfortable with winter hiking.
Planning a trip on your own
If you drive yourself, check the weather, daylight hours and trail conditions in advance, and tell someone your plans. Trails in national parks may not be maintained in winter, and conditions can change quickly.
Bring warm drinks, snacks, spare layers and a fully charged phone. Short winter days mean you should plan to return before dark.
