Winter Clothing in Rovaniemi: Rent or Buy?

By Toni & Jaana, your Arctic Rest hosts · 3 min read · Updated November 2026

One of the first questions families ask before a Lapland trip is whether they need to buy a complete Arctic wardrobe. Often the honest answer is no. A sensible mix of your own layers, items provided by tour operators and, where needed, rented outerwear usually works best.

Check what your tours already include

Many safari and tour operators lend thermal overalls, boots or mittens for the duration of their own activity. Requirements and inclusions differ between companies, so read each booking confirmation carefully before you shop.

If most of your outdoor time is spent on guided tours that provide outerwear, you may only need warm base layers, socks and something comfortable for walks in town.

When renting makes sense

Renting is worth considering if you are visiting once, travelling with growing children or flying with limited luggage. Children's winter gear in particular is outgrown quickly, and a full set for one week can be costly to buy.

Ask any rental provider about sizes, pick-up times and what happens if items are damaged. Book ahead during Christmas and school holidays.

When buying is the better choice

If you already ski or travel to cold places regularly, quality wool base layers, warm socks and good mittens are a lasting investment. Comfortable, well-fitting boots are also personal: many travellers prefer their own.

Whatever you choose, the layering principle stays the same: a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating middle layer and a wind-protective outer layer.

Plan for drying your gear

Wet mittens and socks are a daily reality in winter. Every Arctic Rest home has a washing machine and a drying rack, so you can travel lighter and wash base layers during your stay.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy special clothing for Rovaniemi?

Not necessarily. Check what your tours provide, bring warm base layers and consider renting outerwear if you will spend long periods outdoors on your own.

Do husky and northern lights tours provide warm clothing?

Many operators provide outerwear for their own activities, but this varies. Confirm the details with each operator before you travel.
