Meeting huskies or reindeer is a highlight of many Lapland trips. The experiences are very different, though: one is fast, noisy and exhilarating, the other calm and traditional. Choosing well makes the day memorable for everyone, from toddlers to grandparents.
Husky or reindeer: which suits you?
Husky safaris are lively. The dogs are enthusiastic runners, and rides can be quick and bumpy. They suit families with older children and adults looking for action.
Reindeer farm visits are usually calmer, with a gentle sleigh ride and time to learn about reindeer herding culture. They often suit younger children and travellers who prefer a slower pace.
Questions to ask before you book
Ask about the length of the ride, minimum ages, whether children ride in the sled with an adult, which warm clothing is provided and whether transfers are included. Also ask how the operator cares for its animals.
Shorter experiences are often a better fit for small children. A short ride followed by time with the animals is usually more memorable than a long, cold ride.
Make it a relaxed family day
Book animal activities early during Christmas and school holidays. Plan an easy evening afterwards: a warm meal at home and time to dry clothing make the next day much smoother.
